1 | Ignition repair or replacement service
On Tuesday at 10:40 a.m. a client scheduled a service for an ignition for his 2020 Audi A5 at his condo building in Midtown Toronto. The vehicle was parked in an underground garage. His 2020 Audi A5 intermittently refused to start, the cluster sometimes displayed “Steering lock malfunction” and “Switch ignition off and on.” Towing was possible but inconvenient, the customer asked for on-site automotive locksmith service in order to repair or replace him ignition.
2 | Triage Questions
- How many working keys? — “Two fobs; both are detected.”
- Battery just replaced? — “The battery was replaced 6 months ago; the voltage seems fine.”
- Any dash icons? — “Occasional steering lock warning; no other lights.”
Diagnosis: Symptoms pointed to a failing electronic steering column lock (ESL/J764) or an S-contact/start authorization issue in the ignition/start circuit. Plan: run a dealer-level VAG scan, verify battery and ground integrity, test the start/stop switch output, evaluate ESL status counters, then repair and adapt components as required.
3 | On-Site Diagnostics
- Connected a VAG-capable scan tool at the OBD-II port; captured start authorization faults related to the steering column lock and intermittent S-contact signal.
- Load-tested the 12V system and checked ground points; voltage remained stable during crank request.
- Scoped the start/stop button output and ESL actuation; detected occasional dropouts from the ESL motor driver.
- Verified ownership (registration, licence, VIN).
4 | Step-by-Step Repair
- Removed lower column trims to access the ESL assembly and wiring.
- Replaced the failing ESL module with an OE-spec unit; inspected and re-seated the harness.
- Performed component protection/adaptation to the Access/Start Authorization system (J518) and synchronized with both keys.
- Cleared counters and temporary service flags; confirmed proper S-contact state and start authorization.
- Ran a complete system scan to ensure no residual DTCs.
5 | Quality Control
We cycled the key (lock/unlock and push-start functions) ten times, confirmed positive steering unlock/lock each cycle, and verified by restarting the vehicle numerous times . Remote functions and remote starter were checked. Provided the customer with a few tips for the future: keep the vehicle battery healthy, avoid prolonged accessory mode, and service the column if heavy resistance ever reappears.
6 | Result & Warranty
Total time on site: about 75 minutes, no towing dealership visits were required. The ignition/steering lock now operates smoothly with both keys and no warning signs. We provided a one year warranty for parts and labour for the ESL replacement and offered 10% off for any other services in the future.
