Owning a vintage car means paying attention to every detail, including the keys. A customer brought in his 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 to our local locksmith shop for an extra key made for his vintage Ford Mustang before a weekend trip. The car featured the classic two key Ford system, one key for the ignition and doors, and another for the trunk and glovebox.
Step 1: Initial Assessment
The customer had one worn out ignition key and no trunk key. The car used purely mechanical locks, and while everything worked, the ignition occasionally stuck.
Our goal: make new keys to factory specification, address minor wear, and restore smooth operation without altering the original cylinders.
Step 2: Inspection and Preparation
- Verified ownership using registration, licence, and VIN.
- Inspected the ignition and door locks for wafer wear and correct keyway profile.
- Decoded the passenger-side door lock to retrieve the original Ford key code.
- Checked the trunk cylinder for binding and recorded all measurements for accuracy.
Step 3: Key Cutting & Restoration
- Generated the exact bitting from the door-lock code and compared it with the worn key’s pattern.
- Cut a new ignition/door key using nickel-silver blanks for better durability and smoother operation.
- Originated a second key for the trunk and glovebox, matched to the correct keyway.
- Applied lock safe lubricant to all cylinders to eliminate sticking and extend lifespan.
Step 4: Quality Control
We tested both new keys in all locks and doors, ignition, trunk, and glovebox. All locks and keys cycled smoothly, including multiple ignition hot and cold starts.
We also provided a few care tips:
- Avoid heavy keychains that stress older ignition cylinders.
- Keep a spare key stored safely away from the vehicle.
- Re-lubricate locks once a year or after storage in damp conditions.
Step 5: Results & Warranty
In just under 30 minutes, the owner left our North York locksmith shop with two cut keys for his vintage Ford Mustang. One for ignition and doors, and one for trunk and glovebox, each made to original Ford factory code.
